| Co-op Acceptance Procedures Fall 2008
Job Offers: Employers have been informed that they can begin extending job offers starting November 3, 2008 in the fall semester (March 7, 2009 in the spring semester). If you get an offer, expect that an employer may give you a week or even less to decide. If you receive an offer, always take a day or two to consider it. Also, make certain that you have all of the facts: Starting date, ending date, rate of pay, location of job, hiring manager, detailed description of the job (please note that co-op students are not permitted to "negotiate" co-op pay rates). If possible, talk to the person that you would be reporting to. Never accept a job without full information about your responsibilities. After making a decision about the job, notify the person who initially contacted you; do so by phone.
Other points to keep in mind: Accepting a "first choice" offer If the offer you receive is your "first choice," feel free to accept it. Kindly notify other employers who have been in touch with you that you are "no longer seeking employment with their organization." Thank them for their "time and consideration." Pursuing other Co-op offers If you are interested in the offer but would like to pursue other offers as well, contact the other employers who are of high interest to you. Explain to them, for example: "I'm contacting you, Ms. Jones, to ask about the status of my application for co-op. I received another offer and must respond to it by November 12. However, I would like to know about the position at your company before making a decision." Receiving multiple offers If you receive multiple offers, be certain that you clearly understand the deadline dates for each. If you need additional time to decide on an offer, it is acceptable to call an employer and ask for a reasonable extension. Declining an offer If you decline an offer, never leave a voice message or do so via e-mail. Always speak directly to the person who extended the offer to you. You may say, for example: "Mr. Smith, I would like to thank you for the co-op job offer. The position sounds interesting, and I'm sure that ABC Company is a great place to work. However, I've decided to accept another offer that more clearly matches my interests at this point. I'd like to keep the door open for future employment opportunities, though. Thanks so much for your time and consideration." Your word is your honor! When you accept a job, remember that your word is your honor and you will be held to this decision! Upon accepting the position, please ask the employer for a written copy of the offer (you must provide the CDC with a copy.) Steps to take after you accept a Co-op offer:
As always, the CDC encourages you to make an appointment to see a Co-op Counselor if you have any questions regarding the acceptance procedures. updated 8.27.08 |
