The Hewlett School Established 1915

The Hewlett School Is Not For Everyone.
Hewlett Is For Students Who Want--and Deserve--A Truly Exceptional Education.

-T he Hewlett School is a small, independently funded, not-for-profit, coeducational suburban boarding and day school for young people in Nursery through Grade 12.
-Situated on a lovely 9-acre campus between the villages of Islip and East Islip on Long Island's scenic south shore. The Hewlett School provides a warm, nurturing atmosphere that is most conductive to quality learning and personal growth.
-Sensitive to the numerous individual differences among pupils, the Hewlett philosophy of education calls for a free but thoughtfully structured setting in which each boy and girl is individually challenged and motivated to realize his or her highest potential.
-Hewlett admits children without regard to race, religion, national origin--provided that a comprehensive evaluation indicates that the child can benefit from an individualized program offered at the school. In turn, each child is expected to contribute in a meaningful way to the academic, artistic, social, cultural and spiritual life of the school.
-Class sizes are small and intimate, generally no more than 15 students, Flexibility of individual programs is preserved in a learning atmosphere which provides clear-cut guidelines for action and meaningful standards in performance. All the members of the Hewlett family--parents, pupils, faculty, alumni, administration and trustees--work together in a cooperative setting to make The Hewlett School experience truly happy, productive and life enhancing.
-A dedicated, professional staff of both male and female teachers have numerous years of solid experience. The extremely low ratio of students to teachers allows the Hewlett School to provide complete attention to the individual student's needs.
-Faculty members teach, coach sports, supervise school outings and social events, advise extracurricular clubs, and serve as counsellors to students. In addition to administering a quality education, their mission is to provide the same fair, firm, consistent and continuous direction provided by parents and family. The overall goal is always to provide a structured, creative, supportive and individualized approach to education.

The Academic Program.

-In addition to courses in English, history, mathematics, science, and foreign languages, The Hewlett School provides a variety of electives in art, music, computer science, photography, and other areas.
-All Lower School students are required to take 7 subjects each year from a well-rounded curriculum. Upper School students must take 6 subjects a year, including required and elective courses. Programs for overseas students may also include, when necessary, English as a second language

The Lower School.

-The Hewlett Lower School is comprised of two areas of instruction. A Full-Day Kindergarten provides a cheerful classroom where boys and girls receive the personalized instruction and encouragement that's so important to a young child about to enter the First Grade.
-In Grades One through Six, emphasis is places on Language Arts--reading in particular--as well as mathematics, science, social studies, art, music, physical education and cultural experiences. French and computer instruction are available to all students.
-Grades Seven and Eight provide a unique transition for maturing boys and girls as they take leave of the single classroom concept and explore new fields with new teachers in different departments.
-As in everything at The Hewlett School, the focus in the Lower School is continually on the development of the entire individual, particularly in preparation for the increased vigor of the Upper School and college.

The Upper School.

-The Hewlett Upper School is divided into two areas: the International Baccalaureate Program, and Traditional Curriculum.
-In each program, with both boarding and day students, The Hewlett School prepares its university bound students in an academic sense, and for college and life beyond in a braod sense.
-Traditional subject areas are offered in the Upper School. Emphasis is placed on both curriculum and the encouragement of the type of positive personal and study habits so necessary to success in college...and in life.
-The Hewlett School provides a comfortable and warm environment for learning and continuing growth in self-discipline. Here, young men and women respond to intelectual stimuli and become more self-reliant and self-confident with each new academic challenge. Rapport with faculty members continues beyond the classroom onto the playing fields and into the social aspects of Hewlett.
-College orientation meetings for students and parents begin during the Tenth Grade, to help better prepare them both for the requirements of higher education.

International Baccalaureate Program.

-The Hewlett School Internation Baccalaureate (IB) Program permits university-bound students, from a broad selection of countries, to fulfill requirements for the various national systems of education.
-Based in Geneva, Switzerland, the IB Program is a comprehensive and rigorous 2-year curriculum, leading to examinations, for students between the ages of 16 and 19. In the 20 years since its founding, the IB Diploma has become a symbol of academic integrity and intellectual promise. Many prominent colleges and universities will waive up to 56 credits of college work upon the presentation of an IB Diploma!

College Placement.

-Preparation for college admission begins in the tenth grade, with the scheduling of PSAT, SAT and ACT. During junior, and senior years, students must take as many of the following exams as are necessary: PSAT/NMSQT, Advanced Placement Tests, Achievement Tests and TOEFL. Preparation for these tests is provided within the regular course work, as well as through specialized instruction.
A Capsule History.

-The Hewlett School was founded in 1915, and located at its present site in 1941. Its buildings and campus were at one time the Johnson family estate.
-The original estate dates back to the early 1800s, and was once part of the land grant awarded to William Nicoll by the English king in 1684.
-The present building, "Woodland," was completed in 1909, Webster Hall, which houses our 1-6 classes, was completed in the 1970s. Frederick Hall, located at the north end of our campus, houses grades 7-12 and our library. Science is taught in Hallock Hall, adjacent to Frederick Hall. Physical education is taught in Sullivan Hall and on our playing fields and tennis courts. Our kindergarten and cafeteria are housed in "Woodland."

Established 1915.

-Since 1915, Hewlett's hallmark has been--and will continue to be--a deep commitment to the growth and development of each student as a person, through a wide spectrum of achievements. One of Hewlett's most cherished principles has always been, "Kindness in thought, word, and deed."
-Hewlett encourages an atmosphere where the child, the parents, and the teacher all work together to make the educational experience as enriching as possible.
-The proof: students who have gone on to other private schools have discovered their Hewlett preparation to be so thorough that they ended up in their new schools "reviewing" previously learned Hewlett material for up to a full year.
-A quality Hewlett School education is a complete education.
